Chain theory was popular for many years after it was proposed in 1869 by Blomstrand. In 1893 it was challenged by a relative newcomer, Alfred Werner. Werner called his new theory, "coordination theory".Chain Theory Proposed 1869 The supersession of the most successful pre-Werner theory of the structure of coordination compounds, the so-called Blomstrand-Jørgensen chain theory, by Alfred Werner's coordination theory constitutes a valuable case study in scientific method and the history of chemistry. He is considered one of the founders of coordination chemistry, and is known for the debates which he had with Alfred Werner during 1893-1899. While Jørgensen's theories on coordination chemistry were ultimately proven to be incorrect, his experimental work provided much of the basis for Werner's theories.

Jørgensen, Sophus Mads (b.Slagelse, Denmark, 4 July 1837; d..Copenhagen, Denmark, 1 April 1914) chemistry.. The son of Jens Jørgensen, a tailor, and Caroline Grønning, Jørgensen attended school in Slagelse and later studied at the Sorø Velvillie. In 1857 he entered the University of Copenhagen, from which he received his master’s degree in chemistry (1863) and his docotorate (1869) with Christian Wilhelm Blomstrand (20 October 1826 – 5 November 1897) was a Swedish mineralogist and chemist. He was a professor at the University of Lund from 1862-1895, where he isolated the element niobium in 1864. He developed an early version of the periodic table and made advances in understanding the chemistry of coordination compounds.

His interpretations of the luteo (hexaammines), purpureo (halopentammines)roseo (aquopentaammines), praseo trans dihalotetraammines violeo, (cis-dihalotetraammines), croceo (trans-dinitrotetraammines), flavo (cis-dinitrotetraammines), and other series of coordination compounds were made in light of his logical extensions and modifications of the famous chain theory proposed by the Swedish chemist Christian Wilhelm Blomstrand. His so-called ‘chain theory’, as developed and modified by his fellow Scandinavian chemist and close friend, Sophus Mads Jørgensen, was for more than three decades the most popular and successful of the numerous attempts to explain the constitution, properties, and reactions of coordination compounds.

It is important to realize that not all controversies are of the same kind. They may usefully be distinguished in controversies of fact, of theory and of principle.4 In a controversy of fact, scientists disagree about the experimental basis of This will, according to the theory presented in the beginning of this article, decrease the transport of tryptophan into the brain, decrease 5-HT synthesis, and delay fatigue.

The rate-limiting step in the synthesis of 5-HT is the transport of Trp across the blood- … They also recognised that supply chain theory suggests that the chain should be managed from “end-to-end” but noted that “our research found very few examples of this” (p. 763). This focus on end-to-end thinking is instructive given that integration of supply chain processes and information is a central tenet of contemporary SCM thinking.

In 1893 it was challenged by a relative newcomer, Alfred Werner. Werner called his new theory, "coordination theory". Chain Theory Proposed 1869 : Werner introduces his theory 1893: Jørgensen modifies Chain Theory 1883 An overview of Theory Of Constraints's Chain Theory, and part of the Drum-Buffer-Rope scheduling system. The coordination theory is an abrupt break with both the Kekulé valence theory and the Blomstrand- Jørgensen chain theory. It assumes that the metal is bound to 6 atoms or groups, creating a radical. The remaining atoms or groups are loosely bound to this radical. Although he interpreted their structure in terms of the now defunct Blomstrand-Jørgensen chain theory, his pioneering experimental research on new series of platinum and rhodium compounds (as well as those of cobalt and chromium) has provided us with some of the most fundamental data of inorganic chemistry that are still valid today.

By the late 1860s Kekulé and others had shown that organic molecules were built up of chains and rings of quadrivalent carbon atoms, and in 1869 the Swedish chemist C. W. Blomstrand (1826–1897) suggested that metal-ammonia compounds contained chains of quinquevalent nitrogen atoms, with the −NH 3 − group playing a part similar to that of the −CH 2 − group in organic compounds (). – The purpose of this paper is to critically assess current developments in the theory and practice of supply management and through such an assessment to identify barriers, possibilities and key trends., – The paper is based on a three‐year detailed study of six supply chains which encompassed 72 companies in Europe. Blomstrand's Chain Theory It is beyond the scope of this paper to discuss all the early theories of the structure of metal ammines.9 The view of interest to us here, the only Christian Wilhelm Blomstrand (1826-1897) and Sophus Mads J rgensen (1837-1914). Their Correspondence from 1870 to 1897 Werner was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his coordination theory. The following table is a summary of Werner's observations: Initial compound Resulting compounds upon adding AgNO3 CoCl3·6NH3 [Co(NH3)6]3+(Cl-)3 CoCl3·5NH3 [Co(NH3)5Cl]2+(Cl-)2 CoCl3·4NH3 [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+(Cl-) CoCl3·3NH3 [Co(NH3)3Cl3] As the table above shows, the complex ion [Co(NH3)6]3+ is countered by … Blomstrand’s chain theory, as modified and developed by Sophus Mads Jørgensen, was the most successful of the numerous attempts to explain the constitution of metalamines. It held sway for roughly a quarter century, until it was displaced by Alfred Werner’s coordination theory in 1893. BIBLIOGRAPHY. 1.
